Gratitude
We all hear about gratitude but do we stop to think about what it really means and how do you incorporate it into your daily life? It is much more than simply saying thank you out of habit.
Gratitude simply put, means to be thankful for something. You might be thinking “well I am grateful, I say please and thank you when I receive something”. While this is a good place to start, incorporating gratitude into our daily lives takes much more effort than this. We get used to living our life the way that we always have and we get caught in a trap of doing this day in and day out, without wondering if there is a better way to do things and we often take things for granted. Take a few minutes now to look around you and see what you can be grateful for, it could be as simple as the sun shining, the house you live in, your morning coffee. As you look around for things to be grateful for, you are likely to find more and more things to be grateful for. When you find something to be grateful for, the feeling is more important than the words, so try and feel the gratitude in your body. If you are completely new to this, it may be hard at first but the more you practice it, the easier it will become. Ideally this should become second nature to you, looking for things to be grateful for, rather than looking for things to worry and stress about.
Who are we being thankful to? That depends on what you believe. You can be thankful to yourself, god, the universe or just life itself. As long as you are feeling the feeling of gratitude, it doesn’t really matter who you are saying thank you to.
So why would we want to live our lives in gratitude? Because if we choose not to, we miss out on so much and if we are not actively choosing where to focus our thoughts, we tend to focus on the negatives, the worries and the stress without giving it a second thought. Having your focus this way will create those experiences in your life. So for one day, every time you find yourself thinking about the negatives, switch it around and find five things to be grateful for and eventually this will become a habit. When it becomes a habit, you will be amazed at how different your life can be.
Challenge yourself today to show gratitude and look for the positives and live your life differently. You never know what could happen if you make this a habit :-)
